A role that makes a real difference

We’re expanding our Housing Standards service following a restructure, with additional investment through Team Barrow.

This is a key role focused on improving housing conditions, tackling poor standards and taking enforcement action where needed across the private rented sector.

If you’re confident, proactive and comfortable working in a regulatory environment, this is a great opportunity to be part of a developing service.

About this opportunity

Working as part of the Housing Standards team, you will be responsible for inspecting properties, assessing housing conditions and taking enforcement action where standards fall below what is acceptable.

This is a frontline role combining inspection, investigation and enforcement. You’ll need to take a balanced approach, working with landlords where appropriate but taking formal action where required.

In this role you will:

  • Carry out property inspections using the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) to identify hazards
  • Take enforcement action including serving statutory notices and issuing financial penalties
  • Investigate complaints relating to housing conditions in the private rented sector
  • Prepare evidence and case files to support enforcement action and legal proceedings
  • Support the delivery of HMO licensing, including inspections and compliance checks
  • Contribute to the delivery of the Empty Homes Strategy
  • Provide clear advice to landlords, tenants and agents on their responsibilities
  • Work with internal teams and external partners to resolve housing issues

You’ll be part of a supportive team but will need to be confident managing your own workload and making decisions in live situations.

Who we are looking for…

We’re looking for someone who is confident, organised and able to work in a regulatory role.

You will:

  • Have experience in housing, environmental health or a regulatory environment
  • Be confident carrying out inspections and applying legislation
  • Be able to manage a varied caseload and prioritise effectively
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with a range of people
  • Be comfortable dealing with challenging situations
  • Work well both independently and as part of a team

This role will suit someone who is practical, solution focused and willing to take enforcement action where required. We recognise that not all applicants will have direct experience in housing standards. Where you can demonstrate relevant experience from a similar regulatory, enforcement or housing related role, we will provide training to support you in developing into the post.

What can we offer you!

Working at Westmorland and Furness Council you will receive a variety of benefits, including a competitive pension scheme, enhanced annual leave allowance and other various perks and discounts schemes.
